We're Having A Party: A Birthday Bash | The Harried Mom

For the past two weeks I?ve been stressed out over finding?the perfect venue, booking talented entertainment, loading up on exotic decorations, choosing the menu and deciding what will go in each special guest?s gift bag.? No, this isn?t for some big shindig for wealthy VIPs or gala event tied to my job.? It?s all been over a birthday party for a bunch of five-year olds!

It seems to me that birthdays have become the new ?event? for children.? I?ve seen some parents go totally overboard, pulling out all the stops to throw ?the best party ever? for their kid.? Of course some parents compete with each other to see who can throw the ?biggest? and ?most elaborate? party for their kids ? spending outrageous amounts of money for things like fireworks, elaborate cakes or the latest teeny-bobber to sing ?Happy Birthday.??? Frankly, it?s pretty ridiculous. If you?ve ever watched MTV?s ?Super Sweet 16? or Wealth TV?s ?Party Mamas? some of the parties featured on those shows make my wedding seem like a cheap backyard tea party!

When I was a little birthday parties were all very similar and simple.?? Most were held at home, filled with Kool Aid, candy and cupcakes.? But I do remember a few times my summer birthday celebration got ?fancy.?? One year we held it at our local town pool and my mom had pizza delivered, and instead of cake we all got to get a treat from the ice cream truck.? Another year we all went bowling, and I also remember having a few at a local McDonald?s restaurant (and shockingly, one without a Playplace).

It wasn?t until my son turned three that he hit the birthday party circuit.? In the two years since then, he?s been invited to more than two dozen parties and only one of them was actually held at someone?s house.?? He?s been to places where you can jump around on bouncies, stuff-a-doll, pet exotic animals, ride amusements, play full-sized arcade games and even make pottery.? I have to admit, I don?t always think that the parties he goes to are age-appropriate.? In those cases I try to steer him away from activities that I feel are a little too advanced for him.? He doesn?t seem to mind, he?s perfectly happy to play with his friends, have some cake,?and leave with a goody bag.

My son?s had a total of three birthday parties of his own.? Two were low-key home parties with friends and family when he turned one and three (right before his sister was born).? They were both fun and intimate, but it took a lot of time and work not only to prepare for, but to clean up afterward.

?

?

?

?

?Our son?s first birthday party at our first home, a home thrown luau, complete with tikis, Hawaiian shirt cake and blow up palm tree!

The other was just last year when he turned four. We held it at?local indoor entertainment play place.? It was age-appropriate with an animal/safari theme.? It had a funhouse-jungle gym, pedal go-kart racing and a cannon airball blasting range.? I think some of the parents had as much fun as the kids! The best part aside from leaving all the set up & clean up to the staff was that the party didn?t break the bank.? See, I?d much rather have my boy go to college than have one blowout party to remember.

Our local baker took a normal sheet cake and decorated it with a race car theme, I just added an inexpensive Cars 2 toy that I placed on top of the cake to dress it up.

I want to make this year?s party special, but again age-appropriate and within our budget.? This is the last party he?ll have with most of his pre-school classmates since they all live in different towns and will be going to separate schools come fall.? I opted to go to a location again this year instead of having a party at home (my time, sanity and a clean home are worth something!).

It took some time and lots of searching but I found a great place.? It?s a local art spot where the kids will do a bunch of crafts like spin-art, foam painting and make their own tie-dye shirts which doubles as?their goody bag gift.? His friends will all help to paint a big ?Happy Birthday? paper mural which my son will get keep and remember all his pre-school friends by.? We?ll do all that, have some pizza and cake and be cleared out in 90 minutes.?? And again, we?re not breaking the bank on this party at all, we?re just having some simple fun with art and hopefully, lots of laughs.

Isn?t that what birthday?s are really all about anyway? ? having a good time with your friends, getting some presents and having some treats to celebrate having made it through another year??? I think my son would agree, but I guess that may also depend on what he gets as gifts ;)

Now it?s your turn to share.?? What are your ideas for kids? birthday parties?

Microsoft's rumored tablet may be a Barnes & Noble collaboration with Xbox Live video streaming

Microsoft hearts Barnes and Noble

Rumors swirling around Microsoft's mystery event on Monday have repeatedly centered on a tablet, but if TechCrunch sources are right, Microsoft may only play a partial role in the project. The unveiling, according to the claims, may instead be a tablet, e-reader or a crossover of the two built in teamwork with Barnes & Noble -- a company that just recently established a vague partnership with Microsoft after many months of legal wrangling over Android and the Nook. The slate may not include Windows 8 RT at all, despite earlier assertions, but that's not to say that Microsoft wouldn't be breaking ground in other areas. One of the reported insiders believes it could be the first device without the Microsoft badge to get Xbox Live video streaming, which might explain Redmond's eagerness to turn Xbox into a general media brand at its E3 keynote. It's still very much unknown if there will be any hardware at all, although decisions to host the event in the media capital of Los Angeles and detach the invitation from any existing Microsoft division provide at least indirect support for the notion. Whatever happens, we'll be there tomorrow to give you the lowdown.

Use of in-hospital mortality to assess ICU performance may bias quality measurement

ATS 2012, SAN FRANCISCO In-hospital mortality for ICU patients is often used as a quality measure, but discharge practices may bias results in a way that disadvantages large academic hospitals, according to a recently conducted study.

"Hospitals differ in the number of patients they transfer to other hospitals or post-acute care facilities," said lead author Lora Reineck, MD, post-doctoral fellow at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. "These differences can affect in-hospital mortality measurement if some hospitals discharge patients more frequently or earlier than others, since in these cases the mortality burden is shifted to other facilities. While it's known that discharge practices alter in-hospital ICU mortality measurement, it was previously unknown whether this effect is uniform across hospitals or whether certain types of hospitals are more affected than others."

The results will be presented at the ATS 2012 International Conference in San Francisco.

"We found that this 'discharge bias' disproportionally hurts large hospitals and academic hospitals, which frequently accept many patients in transfer from other hospitals," said Dr. Reineck. "Hospitals that care for a large number of patients insured through health maintenance organizations (HMOs) are also affected, since these organizations typical restrict transfers. Mortality measures tied to a specific time point, such as 30-day mortality, are less biased by discharge practices but are harder to calculate."

In recent years, quality measures have increasingly been publicly reported and tied to financial incentives through pay-for-performance. It is important that these quality measures accurately assess performance and are not flawed by bias. According to Dr. Reineck, "our study reveals that large academic hospitals, as well as hospitals with a high proportion of commercial HMO patients, are more negatively affected by using in-hospital ICU mortality compared to 30-day mortality than other hospitals. Accounting for this bias might prevent these hospitals from being unfairly penalized in public reporting or pay-for-performance programs."

The retrospective cohort study used data on 43,830 ICU patients admitted to 134 hospitals in Pennsylvania in 2008. Discharge bias was defined as 30-day mortality minus in-hospital mortality; greater discharge bias makes a hospital appear of relatively higher quality.

Mean risk-adjusted hospital-specific 30-day and in-hospital mortality rates were 13.1 1.6%and 9.6 1.3%, respectively, resulting in a mean hospital-specific discharge bias of 3.5% 1.3%. Discharge bias was greater in small hospitals, non-teaching hospitals, and hospitals with fewer commercial HMO patients, thereby making these facilities appear relatively better in quality compared to large teaching hospitals or those with a high proportion of commercial HMO patients. Hospital rank was greatly affected by discharge bias, with 29.1% of hospitals increasing in rank by at least one quartile and 26.9% decreasing in rank by at least one quartile. Large teaching hospitals and hospitals with the highest proportion of patients with commercial HMO insurance were more likely to decrease in rank than small, non-teaching hospitals or hospitals with a lower proportion of commercial HMO patients.

"State and national programs that use in-hospital mortality to benchmark hospitals should note how discharge bias unfairly disadvantages certain types of hospitals," concluded Dr. Reineck. "Discharge bias must be accounted for to prevent unfair performance assessments."

Future studies are planned to assess the effects that using this measure in public reporting has on outcomes of ICU patients.

"Bias In Quality Measurement Resulting From In-Hospital Mortality As An ICU Quality Measure" (Session B15, Monday, May 21, 8:45 a.m., Room 3020-3022, Moscone Center; Abstract 30009)

Abstract Body

Rationale: The National Quality Forum recently endorsed in-hospital mortality for ICU patients as a hospital quality measure. However, in-hospital mortality assessments can be affected by discharge to post-acute care facilities, such that differences in in-hospital mortality may reflect variation in discharge patterns rather than quality of care. If discharge practices vary between different types of hospitals, use of in-hospital mortality as a performance measure in quality improvement may lead to health disparities.

Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of ICU patients admitted in 2008 using data from the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (PHC4) state hospital discharge dataset. These files were linked to vital status files to obtain death information for each patient and to Medicare's Healthcare Cost Report Information System to obtain hospital characteristics. We excluded non-general acute care hospitals and hospitals with

Results: The final analysis included 34,932 patients in 128 hospitals. Mean risk-adjusted hospital-specific in-hospital mortality rates and 30-day mortality rates were 10.4+1.2% and 13.2+1.6%, respectively. Mean hospital-specific discharge bias was 2.8+1.2% (i.e. the average hospital's risk-adjusted mortality improved by 2.8% due to discharge bias) and ranged from -1.4% to 6.2%. Overall, discharge bias was greater in small and non-teaching hospitals, making these hospitals appear comparatively better from a benchmarking standpoint (Table). Discharge bias led to substantial changes in hospital rank (Figure). Discharge bias led to hospitals increasing in rank by at least one quartile 27.3% of the time and decreasing in rank by at least one quartile 27.3% of the time. Large hospitals (mean change in rank: -27%, p

Conclusion: Discharge practices bias in-hospital mortality measures in a way that disadvantages large hospitals and academic hospitals. Accounting for discharge bias will prevent these hospitals from being unfairly punished in public reporting or pay-for-performance.

newsle-logo-highresIf you want to see what your friends or contacts are up to, you can check out Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or Instagram for a realtime feed. But what if you want to read news about your friends? That's a little bit trickier, which is why Newsle was born. Axel Hansen and Jonah Varon created the site in early 2011 as a way to find out more about what their friends and people they met at school were up to during the summer, and beyond. At the time, Hansen and Varon were sophomores at Harvard, but they've since taken leave and have moved to San Francisco to focus on Newsle full-time. (Sounds like a familiar story, doesn't it?)

ANALOGUE AND DIGITAL: The Distorted Truth In Glitch

The Distorted Truth In Glitch
Random, Chaotic, Unexpected?and Unpredictable - ?Not Just '?adical'

Glitch is honest. It's raw. It's the visual shorthand for the digital underground. Menacing, uncomfortable and oddly macho-geek, It's also beautifully?inconsistent and a perfect foil for streamlined digital media?culture. Fashion re-appropriates, design manipulates and art creates. This is all part of the constant remixing of culture, perfect for the feedback loop of glitch.?Is glitch the last true art form or is it just a ghost in the machine? Perhaps our future depends on the kind of thinking being applied to the recycling of digital material and perhaps those working with the idea of?disruption will balance an increasingly owned?digital landscape. It's happening in reality...

'Forms of graphic 'distortion' are now common to the internet, perhaps complementary to the almost bathroom-like sterility of web standards, or to demonstrate the infinite shaping and reshaping of memes and visuals as part of an evolutionary process authored by everyone and no one.'?Metahaven

The Dirty New Media

?There are those who would say that glitch art is a form of resistance, not just a representation,? ?explains?Jon Cates, New Media professor at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.?Chicago is a centre of glitch momentum in the US, if not the world and Cates is at the vanguard of it's discovery. ?Jason Scott, historian and archivist for Archive.org, has called our Chicago-based community the 'birthplace of dirty new media' and Rosa Menkman has written that we foreground glitch art in a way which has become a 'pivotal axis' of the international glitch scene? explains Cates. One way on engaging a global audience has been the recent birth of Uglitch an upload site based on the YouTube model. Site founder Benjamin Gaulon aka Recyclism explains the site's reference to YouTube and its users by saying? ?We are building a database of glitch GIFs that can then be used for new work by us and others, we are starting to see similar types of uploads [to YouTube] with? short edited film clips and the like to create glitches?.

'Having networks that facilitate the sharing and creation of images (Tumblr, dump.fm, and Google+) allow communities to form and build memetic value in a hyper-connected fashion. Information splicing with information.'?Travis Stearns?

The GIF file format has been around since the birth of the internet and is a natural means for carrying visual glitches. Designer Travis Stearns explains the attraction: ?their aesthetic is something digital natives are quite familiar with, but as an accessible art and communication medium they haven't been given much attention until this current point where democratisation of the tools for creating animations are universal and available to everyone. Having networks that facilitate the sharing and creation of images (Tumblr, dump.fm, and Google+) allow communities to form and build memetic value in a hyper-connected fashion. Information splicing with information.?

Style V Substance
'Many artists do see glitch as a tool for critiquing popular culture, but many see it simply as a nostalgic--8bit generation--aesthetic, others as digital psychedelia, others as a lens through which to?dissect language + linguistics, and others yet, as a purely structuralist/materialist practice.'?Nick Briz

?Over the past couple of years the visual glitch has become commodified. It's now just another filter in the designer's arsenal, at least as far as the gliche (glitch cliche) is concerned.? notes Ant Scott one of the first glitch VJ's now staunch artist under the name Beflix. The Glitch community is as fractured and distorted as the work it produces. GLI.TC/H the annual global new media festival that brings everything together. Nick Briz co-founder and co-organiser of the festival explains the diversity of the scene and the balance between commercial and 'punk ethos as?[It's] evident from all the debates that glitch.errz partake in glitch art for very different reasons. We had plenty of 'punks' present but we also had designers who work at ad agencies.?

So what of?the commercialisation of the genre? According to Briz this can be split up into two different concepts. One is the?commodification of genre, the other is it's?commercialisation.?

"Many glitch artists?believe?that glitch art can not become a genre, it defies codification in it's form" explains Briz, "That to combine the two words (glitch + art) and to imply that it's a genre or category is to undermine glitch's potential. They?believe?glitch is at it's best when it is random, chaotic,?unexpected?and unpredictable. While I appreciate this position and support the sentiment I do think it's a bit problematic and ultimately not true... of course glitch art is a genre, still it's important to address that such a debate is being had.?

'?I got pretty upset when Kanye West released his video "Welcome To Heartbreak" almost exactly three years ago. I thought it was the end of glitch art' Nick Briz

Next is it's commercialisation. I'm not a big fan of this word, it simplifies a complicated process with inescapably negative connotations. ?Rather, I think?popularisation?is a better term, it's a?slightly?more complex perspective. I got pretty upset when Kanye West released his video "Welcome To Heartbreak" almost exactly three years ago. I thought it was the end of glitch art. I had been making this kind of work for a few years, it was a complicated process and one I felt could only be executed with careful consideration of the material. I thought his video would be the end of such a process and the?beginning?of a commercialized?gimmick. And in some ways it was, datamoshing (the technique he "popularized" but by no means invented) got really "hot", and hundreds of shit videos got uploaded to youtube in its wake. At the same time it?transformed?a community of maybe a few dozen artists (that I knew of at least) into a few hundred artists."

It's not just Kayne West that's tipping the scale, more recently CK One wanted to shock and sniffed out glitch to add some?credibility?to their campaign...

Music and entertainment need not be pimped and perfumed. Andrew Benson teaches at the Design and Technology department at San Francisco Art Institute and works for a number of musicians including the masterfully awkward Aphex Twin.
??

Following a more mainstream alternative, a well travelled field of light artists working with musicians, Benson explains the glitch scene in San Francisco as ?The bay area has a really rich history of experimental non-narrative cinema. I ?hate to say it but I also think the popularity of dubstep has been really good for introducing kids to weird sounds, glitchy artefacts and getting them engaged.? ?Benson is at the top of his field, innovating live performance whilst handling engagement with a wider audience, manipulating and creating aesthetic.

The graphic design community manipulates the aesthetics of glitch, harking back to?halcyon days?Melvin Galapon is a UK-based designer who works on both commercial and artistic projects using glitch and dot matrix as an aesthetic basis for his work. He suggests ?there is a kind of movement where using glitches and dot matrix is retro-cool as the generation of people currently creating work come from an era where this was part and parcel of the technology we are all a part of"

We're comfortable looking at screens and connecting to networks that show nothing but beauty and an obsession with perfectionism. To this end, distortion is closer to the reality of our fractured,?temporal information society.' Travis Stearns

Explaining the relationship that designers have with glitch Travis Stearns explains "I relate distortion in the current context of the internet to punk communication art, particularly xerox flyers and zines. HD screens are hanging everywhere now. The new objects of desire, our smart phones and iPads, favor minimalism and vast white space. We're comfortable looking at screens and connecting to networks that show nothing but beauty and an obsession with perfectionism. To this end, distortion is closer to the reality of our fractured, temporal information society."

The Accidental Anarchists

Jennifer Daniel, designer for BBW explains ?I guess what I'm attracted to is how these visual interruptions create spatial correlations that have always existed but no one else saw. Being able to find something that no one else has articulated is what so many creative consciously try to do. And it turns out you don't even need to have a conscious to do it.?

Transparency

Speaking of the relevance to glitch and branding, Fontaine suggests ?glitch and disturbance makes a work or experience seem imperfect and?therefore more real. It's important that we mix the real and the virtual, blurring the boundaries - it's what people are used to now in these new hybrid realities we immerse ourselves in everyday.?

Transparency also has a political connotation and the self appointed bastion for this is the notorious Wikileaks organisation. Dutch design company Metahaven took on the job of fund raising for the organisation and produced a number of products including a scarf, complete with distorted Louis Vuitton graphics as well as mugs and T-Shirts. The work was recently featured in an exhibition at the Museum of The Image (formerly The Graphic Design Museum) in Breda, Netherlands.

Metahaven explain the link between graphic distortion and the Internet are linked by saying ?forms of graphic 'distortion' are now common to the Internet, perhaps complementary to the almost bathroom-like sterility of web standards. or to simply demonstrate the infinite shaping and reshaping of memes and visuals as part of an evolutionary process authored by everyone and no one.?
'...A whole new approach that combines today?s possibilities in technology, (neo)craft, social media and advertising to create a new world image' Dennis Elbers.

Dennis Elbers, curator at the Museum Of The Image explains the relevance of this ?Designers have the ability to make this world transparent. This is what we need opposed to hierarchy. And I'm not just talking about 'green annual reports' but a whole new approach that combines today?s possibilities in technology, (neo)craft, social media and advertising to create a new world image."

As for far reaching impact of glitch beyond graphics, Benjamin Gaulon aka Recyclism, has this to say: ?current technological design strategies, based on the notion of disposable devices and planned obsolescence, need to be challenged in order to find more sustainable models. By exploring other routes such as hardware hacking and recycling strategies of obsolete technology I believe we can to develop new sustainable models.??

Glitch is not disposable, it is the error of our digital ways if we think it is.?

John Fitzgerald Keitel: The Man from Lincoln, Part 3: Saving the Boom

This is the third installment in a series of stories about my experience on the campaign trail with Fred Karger, an openly gay candidate for the Republican presidential nomination.

This time, when I swung off the 405 onto Laguna Canyon Road, the strawberry fields were long gone, replaced by rows of single-family homes. Moreover, its two lanes were now four of Caltrans' finest, replete with a towering toll road cutting through the San Joaquin Hills above them. The town of Laguna Beach itself was bustling. Quaint oceanfront mobile home parks had been towed away in favor of five-diamond resorts, and the laid-back, youth-oriented surf culture had become just another set piece for reality TV.

The earthy charms that had made Laguna an oasis of inclusiveness on the Orange County coast had become its main draw and, with the financial meltdown of 2008 still over two years away, many people, the gays included, had been priced out of the market.

* * * * *

Conventional wisdom held that a business model based on beer busts, go-go boys, and drag shows could no longer support the current market value of the parcel of coast where the Boom Boom Room and the Coast Inn had stood for over 60 years. By the look of it, it couldn't support a fresh coat of wax on the bar's signature hardwood floors, either. The joint looked tired, like an overbred bitch with a greedy pup sucking at every tit tired.

And, Fred Karger wasn't buying any of it.

Something had definitely changed in Fred. Frankly, I was a little worried about him.

While Fred's family had been breaking bread at Glencoe, Illinois' exclusive Lake Shore Country Club, mine had been a few miles away heatedly arguing politics with door-slamming intensity. And that was just on Easter.

An alumna of Hunter College in New York, back when it was still called the Harvard of the proletariat, my mom instilled in each of her seven children a commitment to higher education and, as one of IBM's first female employees, a will to challenge convention. Coupled with the boisterousness of my dad's Germanic sea captain, it spawned a mix of unyielding convictions. Outspoken debate and criticism are how my siblings and I still express affection.

Fred, on the other hand, had spent his entire professional life in the closet, cultivating a fa?ade of such oppressive heteronormalcy that I couldn't be sure how he would respond to his first taste of authentic public liberation. In his memoir, Fred Who?, he writes about his Leave It to Beaver childhood with a nostalgia that borders on wishful thinking.

The affluent neighboring suburbs in which we each grew up are, after all, Conrad Jarrett's turf, and the pressures Conrad felt are no fiction. Mary Tyler Moore's tour de force as Conrad's mother is so pitch-perfect that I still can't watch Ordinary People without sobbing at the end.

And my mother was nothing like that.

I'm not saying Fred's was, either.

I believe she really was the June Cleaver Fred describes her to be in his book, mostly because, if the Beav had had the chance to grow up, I think he'd probably be Fred Karger. Maybe it's a 50s vs. 70s thing, but there's more to the towns than avocado-colored refrigerators and the neat and tidy endings that come just in time for commercial breaks that Fred recalls, even when he's addressing his own closeted uncle Buddy's suicide.

* * * * *

Maybe it was just easier for me to be gay than it was for Fred.

I never felt like I belonged anywhere anyway, not even in my own family. By the time I was born, all the iconic family photos had been shot, framed, and hung on the walls. Count 'em: six kids. I'm the seventh.

I was the original lonely boy -- very middle-class, very Catholic -- growing up in a very upper-middle-class, Jewish town. Prep school on scholarship in very plaid, very WASPy Lake Forest followed. Instead of Waldorfs, I had Wackers. Think Barack Obama, only gay.

Or maybe that's just what it means to be a politician, and why Fred is one, and I'm not, because it turns out my concern was unwarranted. The demons I had first stared down on the shores of Lake Michigan, Fred was now engaging on the Orange County coast with surprising alacrity. Armed with an arsenal of strategies honed during a career as an operative for conservative candidates and causes, Fred took on the Boom's new billionaire owner, AIG, and even Brad Pitt and George Clooney. This was not your liberal, gay uncle's activism; it was targeted, expediently effective, with the potential for awesome or devastating effects (depending on which side of the fence you found yourself on), and fun.

When Fred Karger winked, I smiled.

* * * * *

Fred succeeded in extending the Boom's 60-year lifespan to 61. Documentaries have a way of hijacking a filmmaker's life, and this one was no different. Every time I found myself heading south for another petition drive, protest, or city council meeting, I cursed Fred and his moxie. His "Men of Laguna Beach" calendar contest was hatched, I'm convinced, just to keep me hooked.

It worked. Over the weeks that turned into months, I found myself rediscovering Laguna. People I had somehow missed my first time around were eager to share their own Boom histories with the audience my camera promised. And as I wrestled with a prodigal daughter elsewhere in my life, Saving the Boom gave me the opportunity to revisit places from my past, which I thought I had left behind.

* * * * *

Nestled on the bluff below the Boom, the Garden of Peace & Love is one of those places. I must have passed it a million times on my way to the beach, but the vagaries of youth had blinded me to a lot of things, and the Garden was one of them.

Founded by Michele Martinay in the 1980s, it began as an impromptu AIDS memorial. With the ocean surf crashing just beneath it and under the watchful eye of Michele, it evolved into a hallowed ground where Lagunans memorialize loved ones of every stripe.

I realized that my film was about not just a bar, but also a history, and the community that history had launched and nurtured.

It was also inexplicably about my mom. The small pine box where she resided had become an interesting if macabre conversation piece back home in L.A. Ironically, her only request had been that she not end up in my closet.

With the bar and dance floor shuttered already for months above us, my siblings and I gathered at the foot of Mountain Avenue with our mother one last time. We added her name to those who had come before, painted on rocks and etched in wood, and gave her the ocean view she had always wanted.

As the breeze carried her away, I caught a glimpse of the boy I had been. I pondered if he had become the man she had intended. I wondered if Laguna was still the town it wanted to be.

Dental And Vision Insurance ? Two Types Of Very Personal ...

For most of us, we come across insurances on rare occasions in out lives. We usually take out something that will cover our lives when we have something worth covering, like getting married or starting a family.

And we will sometimes take out insurances for things, like buildings and our property.

Somewhere down the list of priorities for our monthly outgoings, is the need to protect not just our lives but also some key elements of our health. Whilst full health insurance is important as well, two smaller types of insurance are very vital to our wellbeing and ability to enjoy our lives to the full.

So, How Important Is Dental And Vision Insurance?

These are two critical types of insurance that protects people and their families. Whilst they may seem somewhat different, you might be surprised to find how similar dental and vision insurance is

Both of them are focused on ensuring that two of the most important parts of your body get their regular tune-ups, not to say check-overs.

That dental and vision insurance is often available from similar providers, shows that of all the different types of insurance you can spend your money on, there is a real belief that dental and vision health are two of the most important health measures for most of us.

What?s The Point Of Dental And Vision Insurance

One of the most important things about our dental and visual health is that, with regular attention, we can keep it pretty much under control. Our teeth and gums, as well as our eyes are vulnerable to disease, just like the rest of our bodies, but can be easily managed, with the expert advice that dentists and opticians can provide.

You see, dental and vision insurance concentrates more on prevention than cure ? though the specialists in the field deal with this too! Having a good policy for both of these will always be a great investment as they will not only prevent nasty bills, but they will encourage regular inspections of your mouth and teeth.

If you are working, you may well find that your employer will provide either free or discounted dental and vision insurance. If you are able to take advantage of this it might well be one of the best things you can do.

Remember, your visual and oral health are very important (just imagine what it might be with problems in those areas), so a sound dental and vision insurance policy might be worth the investment as soon as you like!

Hearing Disorders | ArticleGoes - Free Dofollow Article Directory

Hearing Disorders

There are a number of hearing disorders and related conditions that can affect your balance and hearing, as well as your ability to process sounds into comprehendible information. Among this disorders are: auditory neuropathy, central auditory processing disorder, all categories of hearing loss, middle ear infections, Meniere?s disease, otosclerosis, presbycusis, tinnitus, and tumors of the 8th cranial nerve (vestibular schwannomas and neurofibromatosis).

Auditory Neuropathy (AN)

Auditory neuropathy is a type of hearing loss that occurs due to poor transmission of sounds to the auditory nerve and brain. While the outer hair cells of the cochlea are intact and undamaged, sound transmission is still unreliable. The inclusion of neuropathy in the title suggests a disease of the peripheral auditory nerve, but there may not be any direct auditory nerve dysfunction with auditory neuropathy. This may be a disorder of the inner hair cells in the cochlea, the nerve synapse at the auditory nerve, or due to an auditory nerve lesion. Treatment may include hearing aids or cochlear implants, but success is not guaranteed.

Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD)

CAPDs are disorders of the processing of auditory information. Poor processing is noted by issues in one or all of the following categories: sound localization and lateralization, discrimination, pattern recognition, integration, ordering, and grouping of sounds. Actual hearing loss may not necessarily be present. Treatment typically included therapy that focuses on listening, comprehension, memory, and the like, that is customized to each patient?s needs.

Hearing loss

Hearing loss is an impairment of the ability to hear. There are three main types: conductive, sensorineural, and mixed. Conductive hearing loss implies damage or dysfunction in the outer or middle ear. This affects the loudness of sound. Sensorineural hearing loss implies damage or dysfunction of the inner ear. This affects the clarity of sound. Mixed hearing loss involves a combination of the two. Treatment may include both medical management and hearing aids.

Middle ear infections
Middle ear infections are infections of the middle ear space behind the ear drum where the small bones of the ear are located. This type of infection can cause both temporary and permanent conductive hearing loss. Treatment is medical management with antibiotics or surgical intervention with placement of pressure equalization tubes.

Meniere?s disease

Meniere?s disease is an inner ear disorder that can affect both hearing and balance. Patients may experience vertigo, tinnitus, and fluctuating, progressive hearing impairment. Treatment may include therapy for coping strategies, surgical intervention for severe cases, and physiotherapies. Hearing aids may also be fit for those with hearing loss. A competent audiologist with experience fitting patients with Meniere?s disease should be consulted. Due to its fluctuant, progressive nature, fittings are highly specialized for these patients.

Otosclerosis

Otosclerosis is a disorder that causes abnormal bone growth in the middle ear, preventing proper middle ear function. Hearing loss may be conductive, sensorineural, or mixed in nature. If the effects of the otosclerosis are severe, prosthetic surgical intervention may be appropriate. However, more mild issues will typically be treated with a hearing aid alone.

Presbycusis

Presbycusis is hearing loss due to the natural process of aging. Hearing aids and assistive listening devices are the most common treatments. Some patients may also require auditory training therapy to help in their daily communication.

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the ear that others cannot typically hear. Usually described as ringing, buzzing, popping, pulsating, or squealing, tinnitus can range from mild to severely impairing. Treatment may include intense therapy and sound programs.

Tumors of the 8th cranial nerve

Various types of noncancerous or cancerous tumors may grow on the vestibular and/or auditory portions of the 8th cranial nerve. Hearing and balance may be affected. Patients with tumors often also experience tinnitus issues. Hearing loss may be progressive or sudden. Surgery is often required for these issues.

Call today!

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms noted here or are having any other hearing or balance related issues, seek help immediately. Help is just around the corner. Contact your audiologist today for an evaluation for any of these hearing disorders.

As meaning producing machines we give which means to almost everything inside our lifestyle which includes and many importantly to ourselves. At an early age the which means that we give an event tends to become made out to be all about us. While occasions do take place it truly is not the events that are essential but instead the which means that we give them and particularly how we made it out to be about our identification.

Offered the reality that our thoughts establish our emotions or feelings and equally critical that we?re definitely responsible for their development, to adjust or rework our self-esteem, how we are likely to feel about ourselves, quantities to us altering how we see or conceive of ourselves in the world inside the now and this work is our responsibility by yourself. It?s our self-image, how we define ourselves as a person in the world within the present, that determines our knowledge of self-esteem and it really is this that we are really accountable for generating and similarly accountable for reworking. Whenever we alter or remodel our definition of ourselves in the existing we modify how we feel about ourselves and with it our experience of fact and life generally. If we don?t get it that we?re accountable for what we assume about ourselves and that we are the genuine writer of our self-image and self-esteem we?ll carry on responsible some thing or some physique, remain powerless and caught in daily life. The query of how you can actually go about altering or improving an individual?s self-esteem is 1 that has been debated for numerous years by pros both within the psychological wellness and addiction arenas.

Self-esteem can be improved or Eli Manning jersey transformed in several techniques. A single strategy to enhance ones self-esteem is to do the perform of transformation as outlined in my articles, Transformational Counseling and the Discussion of Transformation. To boost ones self-esteem in this manner is usually to turn out to be existing to kinds self limiting notion, that which has stopped us in life and in the method create new choices for oneself, a new self-image from which to start to live daily life into. An additional strategy to boost an individual?s self-esteem is by way of using positive affirmations. Offered the foundation of self-esteem could be the thoughts that a person has about himself, a person with bad or negative self-esteem is believing unfavorable ideas or ideas about who he thinks he?s. The person could feel, as an example, that he?s ?worthless? or ?not good enough? and as a result will have a tendency to knowledge poor or negative self-esteem. Inside the perform of transformation and Transformational Counseling, the believed that?s in the basis or core of our self-talk is defined as a person?s Self Restricting Perception, the basic or core notion about who we believe we?re. Unless of course this core believed or perception that an individual has about himself is changed or transformed he?ll carry on to experience a bad or negative self-esteem and because of this negative thought routine produce or create lifestyle activities that can match up and validate what they feel about their selves. Provided this kind of a cognitive and emotional scenario lifestyle will carry on to seem as it has previously and types future will merely be the possible practically certain future.

Utilizing good affirmations could be a really effective device for transforming what an individual thinks about himself and because of this improve the individual?s self-esteem. Constant utilization of optimistic affirmations will change the unfavorable beliefs about who an individual thinks he is into good ones, will begin to change the foundation and construction of his self speak or internal voice and generate a transformation from poor self-esteem to good self-esteem. Although utilized in an a variety of ways, working with optimistic affirmations will probably be far more efficient when sent by means of or mixed with therapeutic rest songs. What therapeutic rest new music does to enhance the impact of positive affirmations would be to create a really comfortable sound environment for the person to turn into much more open or suggestive towards the language of positive affirmations. When therapeutic relaxation audio is mixed with binaural audio tones the audio room that is certainly designed for the delivery of optimistic affirmations is much more comforting and consequently quite effective. Moreover to making use of an unique form of therapeutic relaxation new music, the infusion of either theta or alpha binaural tones is crucial for the accomplishment of this type of intervention. When therapeutic relaxation new music and binaural audio tones are combined in this fashion the personal will encounter a very deep state of rest and because of this be a lot more open up for the reception and eventual acceptance with the constructive affirmations.

The key for the Eli Manning jersey productive use of positive affirmation within this or any other sort of intervention is consistency. The self-image as well as the unfavorable ideas about who an individual thinks he is that generates his encounter of bad or unfavorable self-esteem is nicely proven within the his opinion system. In numerous situations the improvement of a negative self-image took years to create and has been reinforced via repetitive behavioral validation. Once an individual creates after which believes that a self-limiting notion is accurate he will constantly act as if it is correct. This seemingly basic notion will appear to the person as correct and as a result will continually be acted upon and thus be reinforced through types behavior. Considerably of that person?s conduct is going to be to regularly validate who he thinks he is. Kinds behavior will always be directed at supporting, reinforcing and validating what the person believes is correct about him. While essential for ones well-being and well being, such a transformation of kinds self-image from becoming generally an unfavorable one particular to a single that is basically optimistic doesn?t take place instantly. As with the improvement of an individual?s unfavorable self-image, the development of the far more adequate notion concerning the correct naturel from the personal will necessitate consistent and repetitive work from the individual. Basic to this process is the fact that the person need to totally embrace his sensation of complete responsibility to the development of his self-image as well as for its transformation. To accomplish or else will only go away the personal experiencing powerless and unable to make the life that he or she genuinely wishes and unless there?s consistency and repetition such a transformation will just not happen.

I?m at the moment using Boosting My Self esteem with all of the customers that I counsel at the Holistic Addiction Treatment System in North Miami Beach, Florida. All of the clientele that I have worked with who are experiencing a drug and/or booze dependency difficulty also have very reduced self-esteem. My clientele are likely to be really frustrated and unmotivated in several otherwise most of the various domains of their daily life, such as and especially with their recovery. When given to my customers as homework, constant utilization of Improving My Self worth alters how they assume and improves how they feel about by themselves. By having an enhanced self-image and improved self-esteem my clientele turn out to be a lot more motivated in their daily life and specifically with their recovery. If a person continues to expertise reduced self-esteem and there isn?t any intervention to disrupt the underlying cognitive process getting on improving their lifestyle and operating the 12 Stage Program will probably be meaningless and ultimately given up entirely as numerous other factors have been in the past. It is my opinion that not altering or transforming the fundamental structure of kinds self-image accounts for the excellent percentage of men and women who begin recovery and sooner or later relapse. The operate that?s vital to effective recovery is for the individual to become able to redefine who he thinks he is, to alter his self-image, the really basis of his knowledge of self-esteem and existence. Who the personal believes he?s will decide what he does and just how he will be in and appear to other individuals as well as the planet.
