Bangladesh to allow unions for garment workers

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) ? Bangladesh's government agreed Monday to allow the country's garment workers to form trade unions without prior permission from factory owners, the latest response to a building collapse that killed more than 1,100 people and focused global attention on the industry's hazardous conditions.

The Cabinet decision came a day after the government announced a plan to raise the minimum wage for garment workers, who are paid some of the lowest wages in the world to sew clothing bound for global retailers. Both moves are seen as a direct response to the April 24 collapse of an eight-story building housing five garment factories, the worst disaster in the history of the global garment industry.

Government spokesman Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said the Cabinet approved an amendment to the 2006 Labor Act lifting restrictions on forming trade unions in most industries. The old law required workers to obtain permission before they could unionize.

"No such permission from owners is now needed," Bhuiyan told reporters after the Cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. "The government is doing it for the welfare of the workers."

Local and international trade unions have long campaigned for such changes.

Though the 2006 law technically allowed trade unions ? and they exist in many of Bangladesh's other industries ? owners of garment factories never allowed them, saying they would lead to a lack of discipline among workers.

Trade union leaders responded cautiously.

"The issue is not really about making a new law or amending the old one," said Kalpana Akter of the Bangladesh Center for Workers Solidarity, a group campaigning for garment workers' rights. "In the past whenever workers tried to form associations they were subjected to beatings and harassment," she said. "The owners did not hesitate to fire such workers."

In recent years the government has cracked down on trade unions attempting to organize garment workers. In 2010 Hasina's government launched an Industrial Police force to crush street protests by thousands of workers demanding better pay and working conditions.

That year police arrested at least six activists, including Akter, on charges of instigating workers to vandalize factories. They were later freed, but some charges are still pending.

The activists are also angry that police have made no headway in the investigation of the death of a fellow union organizer, Aminul Islam, who was found dead a day after he disappeared from his home in 2012.

"Islam's case is going nowhere even though police say they are investigating," said Akter.

On Sunday, the government set up a new minimum wage board that will issue recommendations for pay raises within three months, Textiles Minister Abdul Latif Siddiky said. The Cabinet will then decide whether to accept those proposals.

The wage board will include representatives of factory owners, workers and the government, he said.

The collapse of Rana Plaza has raised alarm about conditions in Bangladesh's powerful garment industry.

Bangladesh is the third-biggest exporter of clothes in the world, after China and Italy. There are 5,000 factories in the country and 3.6 million garment workers.

But working conditions in the $20 billion industry are grim, a result of government corruption, desperation for jobs, and industry indifference. Minimum wages for garment workers were last raised by 80 percent to 3,000 takas ($38) a month in 2010 following protests by workers.

Since 2005, at least 1,800 garment workers have been killed in factory fires and building collapses in Bangladesh, according to research by the advocacy group International Labor Rights Forum.

In November, 112 workers were killed in a garment factory in Dhaka, the Bangladeshi capital. The factory lacked emergency exits, and its owner said only three floors of the eight-story building were legally built.

The Rana Plaza owner and eight other people, including garment factory owners, have been detained in the collapse investigation. Authorities say the building owner added floors to the structure illegally and allowed the factories to install heavy equipment that the building was not designed to support.

As of Monday, rescue workers said 1,127 bodies had been recovered from the ruins of the fallen building, where thousands were working at the time of the disaster. Teams were using hydraulic cranes, bulldozers, shovels and iron cutters to uncover bodies.

"We are still removing the rubble very carefully as dead bodies are still coming up," said Maj. Moazzem Hossain, a rescue team leader.

Hossain said they are trying to identify badly decomposed bodies by their identity cards.

On Friday, the search teams received a much-needed morale boost when they found a seamstress who survived under the rubble for 17 days on dried food and bottled and rain water.

The Textiles Ministry has also begun a series of factory inspections and has ordered about 22 closed temporarily for violating safety and working standards.

Study: A Pet A Day, Keeps The Doctor?Away

dogwithballsThere are many pet lovers on this blog and the article below reaffirms your pet-loving lifestyles if not just emotionally but physically good for you. The American Heart Association (AHA) issued a scientific statement last week saying owning a pet may help to decrease obesity, blood pressure and cholesterol. Notably, for those of us who are dog lovers, dogs showed the greatest benefit for pet owners in terms of health benefits.

The study of more than 5,200 adults tied the benefits not only to walking their pets but the calming effects of pets. Glenn N. Levine, a professor at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, stated ?Pet ownership, particularly dog ownership, is probably associated with a decreased risk of heart disease.?

Here is the most interesting stat from the article. About 78.2 million people in the United States own a dog while 86.4 million have a cat. Cat lovers outnumber dog lovers by roughly 10 million! As a dog lover, I assume this is because cats are easier to house and require less space.

Issa seeks deposition from Benghazi review chairs

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Republican chairman of a House panel looking into the attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, wants to take depositions from the leaders of an earlier review board.

California's Rep. Darrell Issa, head of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, on Sunday said he would like to interview under oath former Ambassador Thomas Pickering and retired Adm. Mike Mullen, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Pickering and Mullen led an investigation that examined the September attacks that killed four Americans, including an ambassador.

Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California says Congress' review seems aimed at discrediting former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and her potential 2016 presidential bid.

Issa and Feinstein both appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Mad Genius' Motion Capture System brings Sony's break-apart controller idea to life, and then some

Mad Genius' Motion Capture System Sony's breakapart DualShock 3

Remember that break-apart DualShock 3 idea for motion control Sony had five years ago? A new company named Mad Genius Controllers has surfaced with a working prototype that shows such a contraption working in spades. The setup uses a splittable controller and a processing unit to enable seamless motion control and spacial tracking on any title and system. Because Mad Genius doesn't use any accelerometers or cameras like the current consoles, its creator notes that accuracy of up to 1/100th of an inch is possible

In a video demo with an Xbox 360 version of Skyrim and a modified Xbox gamepad, certain gestures and movements even automate menu selections like a macro. One instance shows the controller being split and held like bow and arrow, highlighting that both sides are tracked in relation to each other -- not to mention that the in-game character's weapon automatically changes without any menu-digging by the user. The current version is merely a wired proof-of-concept, but Mad Genius plans to eventually make it wireless and hit Kickstarter for funding. In the meantime, you can build up anticipation for yourself by checking out the nearly 10-minute long video demo after the break. All that's left is the inevitable Oculus Rift tie-in (like we've just done with this post).

Study: Frequent marijuana use tied to reduced bladder cancer risk ...

By Stephen C. Webster
Sunday, May 12, 2013 19:05 EDT

?

In findings presented last week at the American Urological Association?s annual conference, researchers announced that the conclusion of an 11-year study has found a strong association between frequent marijuana use and a significantly reduced bladder cancer risk, USA Today reported Saturday.

The study, which has not yet undergone peer-review and was not published in any established journal, looked at the cancer risk of more than 83,000 men who smoke cigarettes, marijuana or both.

They found that men who smoke cigarettes multiply their risk of bladder cancer, while men who smoke only marijuana actually lower their risk. Men who smoke both still had an elevated risk of bladder cancer, but it was lower than those who just smoked tobacco.

?Cannabis use only was associated with a 45 percent reduction in bladder cancer incidence, and tobacco use only was associated with a 52 percent increase in bladder cancer,? study author Dr. Anil A. Thomas told the paper.

More amazing still: study participants who used marijuana more than 500 times a year saw even lower bladder cancer risks than those who only used marijuana occasionally. A total of 41 percent of the men studied said they smoked marijuana, while 57 percent smoked tobacco and 27 percent smoked both.

Critics pointed out that the study could have been more thorough if it included a control group of non-smokers and filtered for other lifestyle habits.

The link between lower cancer risks and higher marijuana usage rates is still unexplained, but Thomas speculated that human bladders may have cannabinoid receptors that react to the non-psychoactive components of marijuana, protecting cells against dangerous mutations that can cause cancer.

Although another recent study found that men who used marijuana in their adolescence and then quit experience a slightly higher risk of testicular cancer, those who continued using the substance into adulthood did not show that same risk. Less recently, a 2007 study in the scientific journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics found that a compound in marijuana called CBD can actually slow down and stop gene activity related to breast cancer.

For these and many other reasons, the American Medical Association voted in 2009 to recommend that lawmakers reclassify marijuana to allow for more scientific research into its potential medical uses. Congress, the White House and the courts, however, have refused to act.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama on Saturday praised the nation's police officers for everyday acts of courage, saying they often rush into danger to do "some really tough stuff."

In a White House ceremony honoring some of the bravest, he said America need look no further than the Boston Marathon bombings to know what police are made of: "Police officers ... running towards explosions not knowing if there was something more on the way. Law enforcement from different agencies in different parts of the country working together as one united team to identify suspects and bring them to justice."

He said few will ever forget the end of the marathon manhunt in Watertown, Mass. Suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev died in a gunbattle with police, and residents cheered and gave police high fives after his brother Dzhokhar was apprehended.

"We don't always get that opportunity to stand and applaud the men and women who keep us safe," Obama said. "But they're out there ? hundreds of thousands of you patrolling our streets every single day. And we know that when we need you most, you'll be ready to dash into danger, to protect our lives, even if it means putting your lives on the line."

Obama was flanked by award recipients, many in uniform, with families, friends and other officers looking on from the audience in the East Room.

The annual ceremony honored 43 law enforcement officers who are recipients of the National Association of Police Organizations TOP COPS award.

The group included eight officers from the Oak Creek, Wis., police force who battled a gunman at a Sikh temple last Aug. 5. The gunman killed six people before turning his weapon on himself. Obama singled out Brian Murphy, the first to arrive, who, he said, suffered 12 bullet wounds.

He also singled out New York police Detective Ivan Marcano, who was off duty in the Bronx with his girlfriend when he saw muggers attack a cab driver. Obama recounted Marcano being shot inches from his heart yet still giving chase to the suspects ? holding his wound with one hand and his weapon with the other. Obama had Marcano's girlfriend stand, saying, "This was his date night! It's unbelievable."

Other honorees included officers from California, Illinois, Iowa, Florida, Indiana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Texas and Wisconsin, as well as three FBI agents from Nevada.

"They'll tell you they're not heroes. They'll say they were just doing their jobs," Obama said. "Today we honor them as TOP COPS because they're half right."

He said they signed up knowing "they might be called upon to do some really tough stuff. But I think that makes them more heroic, not less heroic."

Obama added America owes police officers all the support it can give ? including the resources and equipment to do their work. He said that includes enough money to prevent layoffs and what he termed "common sense" gun measures.

Obama's efforts to enact tighter background checks for gun purchases following last December's Newtown, Conn., elementary school shooting have so far failed to make headway in the Senate.

Ahead of Mother's Day, Obama rallies women around health law

President Barack Obama on Friday touted his health care law's benefits for women, whose response to the program the White House believes will be key to its success.

Moms "so often they put everything else before themselves," Obama said, tying the event, held in the White House East Room, to Mother's Day.
"And that?s particularly true when it comes to things like health care." Obama said mothers worried about potential health care bills put their children first but he said his health care law, officially named the Affordable Care Act, has changed that.

"In a country as wealthy as this one, there was no reason why a family?s security should be determined by the chance of an illness or an accident. We decided to do something about it," he said.

The event helped launch a campaign the White House is undertaking to spread information about the program and get mothers to encourage their adult children to enroll in health care "exchanges."

There's "so much misinformation" surrounding the law, the president said on Friday, that "people may not have a sense of what the law actually does."

He noted that the 85 percent of people who already have insurance will not be affected by the program.

Hispanics and African-Americans will be major target groups for enrollment in the program, which is set to begin in October, a White House senior administration official said on Friday. But the White House believes young people are the single most important group for the success of the health care exchanges?where the noninsured can buy health insurance at competitive rates?which will be established by states and the federal government, the official said.

Stability for the program and the cost of insurance premiums is dependent upon young people: 2.7 million healthy 18- to 35-year-olds are not currently covered by insurance, according to the official. Participation by these young people will offset the higher costs of covering seniors. But the challenge is getting young and presumably healthy people to sign up.

That's where the White House says mothers come in: They'll be key to encouraging their sons and daughters to sign up, the official said.

The White House will conduct outreach at the local level, in part by using tools from the campaign trail, as well as relying on information disseminated by centers for Medicare and Medicaid services, hospitals, community health centers, local churches and community leaders, officials said.

Overall, the Congressional Budget Office projects 7 million enrollees in 2014.

Many Republicans have issued dire predictions about implementation of the law, and some Democrats have added their voices to those expressions of concern.

Obama conceded on Friday that there have been "mistakes and hiccups" already, and specifically identified the original release of a 21-page application as a misstep?one that received a widespread negative reaction. Obama said that the White House, which then released a three-page version, realized "we [could] do better than that."

The White House believes they'll have the upper hand in Republican attacks on Obamacare once people enroll. At that point, the official said, Republicans would look like they were trying to take health care insurance away from Americans.

In the meantime, Republicans are continuing their assault on the controversial program, with House Republicans planning a vote next week on whether to fully repeal the law.

?The president?s health care law is a train wreck for men and women alike, and that?s why a majority of Americans support Republican efforts to repeal it to protect their health care?and their jobs," House Speaker John Boehner said in a statement on Friday. "Next week, the House will act to repeal the law that is increasing health care costs, reducing access to quality health care, and making it harder for small businesses to hire workers. The entire law should be repealed so we can enact a step-by-step, common-sense approach to health care that starts with lowering costs and protecting American jobs.?

The vote in the House, however, is largely political theater.

Republicans have staged dozens of votes to repeal the law in whole or in part in the three years since the measure passed into law. Additionally, if a repeal measure did pass the Republican-controlled House, the Democratic-controlled Senate would kill the effort.

The president's event Friday was promoted in advance by the White House, but ended up being overshadowed by continued questions regarding the administration's handling of the 2011 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi and an admission Friday by the IRS that the agency placed more scrutiny on potentially conservative groups among those applying for tax exempt status.

Colombia's Santos likens 'warmaker' leaders to Caligula

By Helen Murphy

BOGOTA (Reuters) - Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos has taken another apparent potshot at his predecessor, comparing him with tyrannical Roman Emperor Caligula in an increasingly heated internal dispute over the direction of peace talks with Marxist rebels.

In what Colombians saw as another veiled poke at former leader Alvaro Uribe, who has publicly criticized peace talks with FARC rebels, Santos, 61, said some past presidents had wanted war for its own sake.

"Yes, there are some leaders, some heads of state in the past, in history - Caligula liked to make war just because, because he lived for war," the president said in comments carried on his website late on Thursday.

"But that's not logical, it makes no sense. One has to look for peace. It's a constitutional mandate, but we don't need mandates to seek peace. It's an obligation."

The mandate reference appeared to be pointed at former President Andres Pastrana, 58, who led a drive for peace in 1999 that ended in shambles three years later.

Pastrana has said he was the only president with a real "mandate" to seek peace, and has also been critical of Santos.

Santos, the scion of one of Colombia's most powerful families, and the two former presidents have been sparring for several months over how to end the half-century-old conflict.

Uribe, 60, whose father was killed in a botched kidnapping attempt by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, is furious at what he sees as a deterioration in security under Santos and the government's bowing to FARC demands at the negotiating table in Cuba.

Santos' Caligula comment was assumed by local media to have been an erudite dig at Uribe.

Emperor of Rome between 37 and 41 AD, Caligula was "a mad and unpredictable tyrant," according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica. He was murdered along with his wife and daughter.

Uribe, de facto leader of the opposition, is angered at the possibility Santos would allow FARC leaders to sign a peace accord and not serve jail time for crimes stretching back decades.

Santos has said that such discussions have not yet taken place during peace talks between the rebels and Colombia.

The talks are a big political risk for Santos, who took office after serving as Uribe's defense minister, and may seek re-election in 2014.

Negotiations in Cuba have stretched almost seven months and the two sides have been unable to agree on the first of a five-point agenda. But Santos, a keen poker-player, is optimistic.

"Let's make this reflection," Santos said. "If we achieve an end to the conflict, if we reach an accord in Havana, who hands in their weapons, and who keeps them? And therefore, who won?"

CSN: Boston's Lester one-hits Jays

BOSTON ? Believe it or not, it?s been almost five years since Jon Lester no-hit the Royals on May 19, 2008, at Fenway Park.
?
Lester flirted with history again Friday night, carrying a perfect game against the Blue Jays through 5 2/3 innings. But Jays No. 9 hitter Maicer Izturis broke up Lester?s bid for perfection on the first pitch of sixth-inning at-bat, lashing a double down the left field line.
?
The left-hander lost his bid for a perfect game, but kept his record perfect, improving to 5-0 with a 2.73 ERA as the Sox beat the Jays, 5-0.
?
Lester pitched a complete game, the Sox? first since Clay Buchholz went nine innings against the Indians on Aug. 10.
?
Lester struck out five, including two in the ninth, striking out his final batter Adam Lind on a cutter.
?
Meanwhile Jays right-hander Ramon Ortiz, who last faced the Sox in 2004 and last started against the Sox on Aug. 7, 2003, at Fenway, kept Sox batters in check. Making his second appearance and first start of the season for the Blue Jays, went five innings, giving up one run on four hits and five walks (one intentional) with one strikeout.
?
In the second Daniel Nava reached on a one-out walk, taking third on Jarrod Saltalamacchia?s single, and scoring when shortstop Maicer Izturis committed an error on Will Middlebrooks? groundball.
?
But the Sox scored four runs in the seventh inning off a pair of Blue Jays relievers, when they sent eight batters to the plate. Jacoby Ellsbury, Shane Victorino, and Dustin Pedroia opened the inning with consecutive singles off Brett Cecil, with Ellsbury scoring. After striking out David Ortiz, Cecil?s outing was done, with Mickey Storey replacing him. Storey struck out Mike Napoli before consecutive doubles by Daniel Nava and Jarrod Saltalamacchia scored three runs, giving Boston a 4-0 lead.
?
Ortiz took the loss, falling to 0-1, with a 3.24 ERA.

STAR OF THE GAME: Jon Lester
Lester carried a perfect game thru 5 2/3 innings, before Jays No. 9 hitter Maicer Izturis doubled down the left field line. That was the only baserunner he allowed in the complete game.
?
It was his first complete game since an Aug. 30 loss in Oakland. ?It was his third career shutout, and first since July 3, 2008, in Yankee Stadium. He had gone 149 starts between shutouts.? It was the first complete game by a Sox pitcher this season, and the first since Aaron Cook?s in Seattle on June 29, 2012.
?
Lester retired the Jays on six pitches in the first innings and needed just 58 pitches to get through the first five innings.
?
He was the first Red Sox left-hander to allow one or fewer hits? a complete game since he threw his no-hitter on May 19, 2008, and was the first Sox left-hander to allow exactly one hit in a complete game since Frank Viola on ?Sept. 30, 1992, at Toronto. .The last ?Sox left-hander to allow exactly one hit in a complete game effort at Fenway ?was Roger Moret on Aug. 21, 1974 against the White Sox.? It was the first time since at least 1916 that a Sox lefty has held opponents to one or fewer hits without allowing a walk in a complete game.
?
Lester improved to 5-0 in 8 starts this season and lowered his ERA to 2.73.
?
It was was the 90th of his career, moving past Babe Ruth, ?with 89, for sole possession of 5th all-time among Sox left-handers.
?
HONORABLE MENTION: Daniel Nava
Nava went 1-for-3 with a two runs scored, two RBI, and a double. He scored the first Sox run of the game.
?
He drove in two runs in the seventh inning and now leads the team with an average of just 4.39 at-bats per ?RBI, with 101 at-bats and 23 RBI.
?
THE GOAT: Brett Cecil
With the Sox leading by just one run, Cecil relieved Ortiz in the sixth inning. He went 1 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on four hits with one strikeout.
?
THE TURNING POINT
Although Lester was perfect through 5 2/3 innings, when Izturis broke that up with a double, the Sox were leading by just one run. Adam Lind followed him, pinch-hitting for Rajai Davis. But Lind struck out to end the sixth. That was all the offense the Jays could muster against Lester in the game.
?
BY THE NUMBERS: 28
Lester faced 28 Jays batters, just? one of the minimum. ????

Heart Health: Ayurveda to Reduce High Cholesterol

Unhealthy lifestyle and eating outdoors regularly can increase your risk of heart diseases. One way to maintain a healthy heart is to increase good cholesterol and lower bad cholesterol. Ayurveda has remedies that can help you control cholesterol and improve heart health. Read on to learn which herbs can lower high cholesterol and ways to control cholesterol.

Cholesterol is something that the body needs to build and maintain cellular health. Technically it is known as a lipid and is a fatty or wax-like material that circulates in the bloodstream.

There are two kinds of cholesterol, and you have probably already heard about them, but they are:

LDL - this is the "bad" cholesterol that can cling to arterial walls and create blockages that result in strokes and heart attacks.

HDL - this is the good type that is going to actually protect you from heart disease.

We get cholesterol from our foods, but our bodies can also make it too. Hence this leads to high levels of cholesterol in the arteries.

In ayurveda, certain herbs, ayurveda treatments and remedies can lower high cholesterol. These are:

- Garlic: Garlic is the most common herb that is used in Indian cooking and no dish tastes the same without it. Having two to three garlic cloves a day can break down bad cholesterol and free it from the arterial walls.

- Coriander: This green herb adds freshness, flavour and colour to any meal. Coriander is a diuretic that will flush out waste and even excess cholesterol.

- Tulsi: Tulsi disintegrates cholesterol from the arteries and washes it from the body.

- Guggul or Commiphora wightii: Guggul is a sap from the Mukul myrrh tree. There are several products made from Guggul that helps to reduce high cholesterol.

- Arjuna or Terminalia Arjuna: Arjuna?s white bark has medicinal properties that dissolve cholesterol from the arteries. Arjuna?s bark is made into a powder available at several stores.

(Richard Family)

The family of Martin Richard, the 8-year-old boy killed in the Boston Marathon bombings, said today that his sister Jane, 7, has undergone 11 surgeries in the last 23 days and soon may be ready for rehabilitation.

Their parents, Bill and Denise Richard of Dorchester, Mass., were among the approximately 200 people who suffered injuries that day.

In a statement released today?by a family spokesman, Larry Marchese, the parents said that their daughter Jane was making improvement.

?While she has more trips to the O.R. ahead of her, last night?s operation marked an important milestone, as doctors were finally able to close the wound created when the bomb took her left leg below the knee,? wrote the Richards. ?Part of the procedure involved preparing Jane?s injured leg to eventually be fitted for a prosthesis.

?By closing the wound, the incredible medical team at Boston Children?s Hospital laid the groundwork for Jane to take an important step forward on the long and difficult road ahead of her.?

Family members said that through the trauma, they have learned ?not get too high or too low. ?We take today?s development as positive news and look ahead with guarded optimism.?

They are hopeful that Jane might be ready for rehabilitation in the coming weeks.

?Getting to this point has not been easy for Jane,? they said.

The little girl has fought off infections and other medical complications.

?After not being able to communicate with Jane for the first two weeks, she woke up with difficult questions that needed to be answered,? her parents said. ?There are not words to describe how hard sharing this heartbreaking news was on all of us.?

One of the questions was about her brother, Martin, who died in the explosions at the finish line of the marathon. Friends said he was a typical boy who loved to ride his bike and play baseball. They called the boy?s death ?an unfathomable loss.?

His parents are prominent members of the community, and Denise Richard works as a librarian at the Neighborhood House Charter School, where Martin was a third-grader and Jane attends first grade.

The Richards were discharged from?Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center a week after they were admitted, according to the statement.

Denise Richard, 43, still has no sight in an injured eye, but doctors have said they are ?pleased? with how she has healed from surgeries.

?Bill is healing from the shrapnel wounds and burns to his legs, and we remain hopeful there will be improvement over time from the hearing loss he suffered,? said the family statement. ?It will be several months before we know what, if any improvement Denise or Bill will experience.?

Their 12-year-old son, Henry, is now back at school, ?which?gives him a needed sense of routine and normalcy,? according to the family. ?We will continue to stay together in the Longwood Medical Area until Jane is discharged. Our focus as a family remains on healing from our injuries, both physical and emotional.?

The family admitted that it faces challenges ahead, and psychological experts agreed.

Some of the most difficult times will be adjusting to their ?new normal,? according to?Dr. Paula K. Rauch, a psychiatrist and founding director of the ?PACT (Parenting at a Challenging Time) program at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

?If you imagine some of what it?s like to be managing so many medical complications and emotional issues, it?s like climbing a rock face: You are not feeling all the feelings until you are done with that mountain climb,? said Rauch.??Often, we get to emotional safety and then the feelings?percolate?up. They have so much to manage day-to-day and hour-by-hour ? that?s where the focus will be. ?When the family ultimately settles in to their new normal, there will be waves of emotion to cope with.?

The family members thanked the community for all its support, saying it had been ?uplifting ? in this most painful and difficult time.?

They also credited first-responders and ?Samaritans? who ?stabilized and comforted? them at the scene of the bombings.

?We particularly want to thank the people who quickly got to Jane and addressed her injury in the street because they saved her life,? they said. ?We also salute those who stood guard over Martin?s body so he was not alone.?

They acknowledged that well-wishers wanted to ?do more? to help the family, but they asked that their privacy be respected.

?As hard as it is for us to do so, we ask for your continued patience as we work through something for which there is no roadmap, and there are no instructions,? they said, promising more updates about Jane?s recovery.

Psychiatrist Rauch said that the family?s statement demonstrated ?how hard they are working to stay together as a family, and how appreciative, on one level, they are for the outpouring of care and support, but how much they need their privacy.

?When?families face terribly difficult experiences, they often feel they have to take care of their well-wishers,? she said. ?One of the errors of kindness is doing something intrusive. ? Give people the time to focus on day-to-day, small victories, and it sounds like there have been lots of wonderful victories in their daughter?s care. I am sure there have been moments of relief as well as moments of great sadness and frustration.?

Many well-wishers have been struck by the strength of a family that has suffered so much loss, but Dr. Eugene Beresin, director of training and adolescent psychiatry at Massachusetts General and Mclean hospitals,?said people can be resilient.

?Resilience is not?intrinsic,? he said. ?It?s not something you are born with. It includes biological attributes. But, apart from your own nature, the most important elements are engagement with others, awareness and self-reflection.

?That?s why families, community and spiritual support are important,? he said. ?They need to reflect on their past and present and where they go now. And people ?need that space to reflect.?

UFC gives details on deals with Fox Sports 1, BT Sport in the UK and YouTube

Remember when the only way to watch the UFC was on pay-per-view? And even then, the preliminary fights were only available to the people in the arena? It wasn't that long ago. On Thursday, the UFC announced three deals that will give fans more ways to watch their fights.

-- Fox Sports 1 is going to launch in August, and the new station will devote plenty of airtime to the UFC. It will start with UFC on Fox 1 1, an event name that needs work. The program covering this show will run seven and a half hours, meaning that an entire UFC event will be on one channel.

-- That will just be the start of the UFC presence on this channel, that will be a rebrand of the Speed network. A live show is planned for August 28, and another live show leading into "The Ultimate Fighter" will run on Sept. 4, with TUF starting at 10 p.m. ET.

-- Cagereaders in the United Kingdom will start watching BT Sport, as the UFC agreed to a three-year deal with that station. Like with Fox Sports 1, it's a new station, and will air live events and programming specifically for the UK market. Let's all hope for a Michael Bisping reality series.

-- The UFC also announced a new channel on YouTube. The promotion will offer a pay-for subscription channel that will give fans the option to watch some of their best known fights, and shows like "UFC Unleashed" and "Best of PRIDE" for $5.99 a month.

Sharp reportedly firing 5,000 employees, narrowing focus on smartphone displays

Sharp finally had something positive to report a couple of months ago when it received a much-need cash injection from Samsung, but today's news isn't so rosy. According to The Asahi Shimbun, Sharp will reveal a three-year management plan next Tuesday that'll see 5,000 workers losing their jobs as part of the company's efforts to claw its way back into the black. Many of those who are expected to be axed are said to be employed outside of Japan, but the number of empty desks at Sharp's head office in Osaka is also set to increase -- half of the workforce there will be sent on their way, including half of the company's directors. Allegedly, Sharp will also begin focusing on producing more 4K sets and 70-inch or over HDTVs for the US market, as well as making more "small-sized panels for smartphones and other devices." Who exactly are these displays being made for, we wonder?

Sony waives its publishing fee; Would Apple ever do the same?

Video-game maker Sony has been making a big push for independent developers lately, both on its handheld PS Vita system and on its upcoming PlayStation 4 console, and yesterday, the company took another big step. Sony has decided to waive its usual US$99 fee for PlayStation Mobile developers, meaning that anyone can join the developer network and publish games on its platforms for free. That's a big move, and while it might not mean a boost in PlayStation Mobile publishing (there are other hiccups, such as the difficulty of game creation and the limited size of the market), it does show just how open Sony is to independent software developers.

So here's a question: Would Apple ever do the same thing? Ever since the App Store opened, Apple has charged $99 a year for a developer account to publish apps on its platforms. Anyone can download and use Xcode to make apps, but to publish them, you've had to pay that fee, and the price has never changed.

If Apple did lower the price or remove it, there would be some benefits: There'd be more apps on the App Store, and thus more potential profit for Apple and its developers. The developer community would be more open, which would lead to better documentation and communication in general. And while, yes, there would probably be even more low-quality apps, there would also be more potential for great or terrific apps that focus on a relatively niche market.

However, Apple would lose all the money it makes from the developer fee, money that probably goes into maintaining the developer network and its services. And Apple likely doesn't want the dev network to be a complete free for all. It still uses that network to beta test new software and operating systems, and there is still (technically) a non-disclosure agreement that binds anyone who signs up for the program.

Plus, it's not like Apple needs more developers. Those numbers are growing every day, even with the fee in place. So it seems unlikely that Apple will drop or even change that fee anytime soon: It's a very low barrier to development, but for Apple, it's better than no barrier at all.

Facebook Pages Manager gets overhauled for speed, scrolling and stickers

Facebook

Facebook has pushed out an update to their Pages Manager app for iOS, with the emphasis on a rebuild for speed. Facebook says that they have completely rebuilt the app for version 2.0 so that it is faster and easier to use, with much improved timeline scrolling.

It's not all about speed, though, and as with recent updates to the main Facebook app and to Facebook Messenger, Pages Manager also gets the emoji and stickers treatment for messages. Photos can also now be closed with a downward swipe, and there are options to post photos with filters and auto-enhancements.

We all like extra speed, but is it a noticeable improvement? Is Pages Manager now the Facebook app you always wanted it to be?
